In John 4:46-53, I want you to see the faith of a believing nobleman and ask yourself whether your faith is resting in Jesus or simply in what He can do for you. Scripture teaches that faith is essential. Without faith, it is impossible to please God, and it is through faith that you overcome the world and receive the hope of eternal life.
The nobleman had heard about Jesus and came to Him because his son was dying. Like many people, he first approached Jesus out of desperation. Jesus challenged him—and everyone listening—by saying that people often refuse to believe unless they see signs and wonders. That same challenge confronts you today. Are you seeking Jesus only when life becomes difficult, or are you seeking Him because you truly believe He is the Son of God?
If you belong to Christ, He lives in you. As Paul wrote, “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” Your life should reflect His presence every day. Since your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and Christ purchased you with His own blood, you are called to glorify God in both your body and your spirit. The people around you should be able to see Christ living through your words, your actions, and your character.
Notice what happened when Jesus simply told the nobleman, “Go your way; your son lives.” The man believed Jesus’ words without demanding proof. He trusted Christ enough to begin the journey home. When his servants met him and confirmed that his son had been healed at the exact hour Jesus spoke, his faith matured even further. He moved beyond believing in Jesus’ promise to believing fully in Jesus Himself.
That growing faith transformed his entire household. The nobleman shared what Christ had done, and his family also came to believe. His example reminds you that genuine faith is never meant to remain private. When Christ changes your life, you should eagerly share the gospel so others can come to know Him as well.
The nobleman’s journey is one you are called to follow. Hear the gospel, place your trust in Jesus, repent of your sins, confess Him as the Son of God, and obey Him. If you have not done so, respond in faithful obedience through baptism for the forgiveness of your sins. Then continue walking faithfully with Christ. When you stumble, seek God’s forgiveness and keep serving Him. May your faith grow beyond merely believing in Christ’s words to trusting completely in the Savior Himself, so that your life points others to Him.
