I want to talk to you about why we need God. Every one of us needs Him. When we come into this world, we’re completely dependent on others – we need our parents or caregivers to provide for us, nurture us, and protect us. As we grow older, it’s easy to start believing that we can make it on our own, that we don’t need anyone, and especially that we don’t need God. But the truth is, no matter how self-sufficient we think we are, we remain deeply dependent on Him. Let me show you why.

The first reason we need God is because He is our Creator. Think about that for a moment. God is the One who made everything – the heavens, the earth, the seas, and all that is in them. Genesis 1:1 tells us, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Exodus 20:11 states, “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them.” In Hebrews 11:3, we read, “By faith, we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.” God is the Creator of all things, including you and me.

He made us in His image. Genesis 1:27 tells us, “So God created man in His image; in the image of God, He created him; male and female He created them.” What does it mean to be created in the image of God? It means that God, who is Spirit, has given each of us a spirit. We are like Him in this way, created with an eternal soul. Not only did He create us, but He knew us before we were even formed in our mother’s womb. Psalm 139:13-16 says, “For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb… My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret… Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.” Before you were born, God knew you. He knows you better than you know yourself; just as the creator of a car knows every detail about how it operates, God, your Creator, knows your strengths, weaknesses, and purpose.

And that brings us to a second reason we need God: He is our Redeemer. Every one of us has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, as Paul writes in Romans 3:23. We have made a mess of our lives, and without God, there is no way to fix it. But God offers Himself as our Redeemer. Psalm 34:22 declares, “The Lord redeems the soul of His servants, and none of those who trust in Him shall be condemned.” He sent His Son, Jesus, to redeem us. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, we are offered forgiveness and a chance to start anew. We could not achieve this on our own – only through God’s mercy and grace that we are redeemed.

Finally, we need God because He is our Provider. Acts 17:28 reminds us, “In Him we live and move and have our being.” He provides for our every need – food, shelter, and breath. But beyond our physical needs, God also provides for our spiritual needs. He gives us strength through His Spirit to face the challenges of life. Ephesians 3:16 tells us that God grants us strength “according to the riches of His glory.” And in Ephesians 6, we are reminded to put on the whole armor of God to stand against the challenges and trials that come our way.

Some reject the need for God in their lives. But without God, there is no actual knowledge of self or purpose. Without God, we cannot atone for our mistakes or find real meaning in life. It is much better to acknowledge our need for Him, look to God for wisdom and guidance, and rely on His care and strength to live an abundant life.

So, this morning, I ask you – are you a child of God? If you are not, there are steps you must take. You must hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ, repent of your sins, confess that Jesus is Lord, and be baptized for the remission of your sins. And if you are already a child of God but have stumbled, remember that we can always go to God in prayer and ask for forgiveness.

God is here, ready to meet you, provide for you, and redeem you. Will you answer His call today?
