This morning, as we gather to worship in truth and spirit, I’m drawn to speak to you about the profound importance of faith in our lives as Christians. In James 2:14-26, we are reminded that faith is an essential element for anyone following Christ. Hebrews 11:6 tells us that without faith it is impossible to please God, and our very salvation hinges on it, as Ephesians 2:8 and 2 Corinthians 5:7 articulate. However, there are different types of faith, and crucially, only one type will lead to salvation.
James discusses these varying types of faith, emphasizing the kind that contributes to saving our souls. The first type he describes is akin to intellectual faith – one that knows the doctrine of salvation but doesn’t truly trust Jesus for personal salvation. This faith is inactive, an acknowledgment in mind without a transformation in life. James compellingly argues that this faith, devoid of works, is dead.
The second type of faith, which even demons possess, acknowledges God intellectually and emotionally. Yet, this too falls short of salvation, as it fails to lead to obedience and a changed life.
James then presents the only type of faith that can save – dynamic faith. This faith is comprehensive, involving the intellect, emotions, and will. It leads to action and is characterized by obedience and good works. Dynamic faith is visible and active, as exemplified by Abraham and Rahab, who demonstrated their faith through their deeds.
As Christians, we must examine our own faith. Does it stop at intellectual assent or emotional experience, or does it propel us into a life of action and obedience? True saving faith will manifest in a life changed and dedicated to living out Christ’s teachings.
If you haven’t yet taken the steps to salvation – hearing the gospel, believing it, repenting of sins, confessing Christ, and being baptized for the remission of sins – or if you need to recommit yourself to a life of dynamic faith, this is the moment. Each one of us faces the challenge to not only profess faith but to live it out fully, allowing it to transform every aspect of our lives.
