As we celebrate Mother’s Day, I am deeply grateful for mothers, my wife, and the incredible blessing they bring into our lives. Proverbs 31 beautifully captures the essence of a virtuous woman, clothed in strength and dignity, speaking wisdom and kindness, and being a constant source of blessing and praise to her family.
As we focus on Colossians 1:24-29, I want to share a story. Imagine yourself with a hot drink in hand when someone bumps into you, causing a spill. The obvious reason seems to be the bump, but the real reason is that your cup was filled with coffee. This leads me to ask: what is your cup filled with? Life will inevitably jostle us—what will spill out of you? If you fill yourself with Jesus Christ and His Word, what overflows will be hope, faith, and love.
Reflecting on Paul’s sufferings, we see that his hardships were profound. Yet, Paul rejoiced in his sufferings, not because they were easy, but because they served a greater purpose. His afflictions benefited the Gentile Christians, setting an example of joy and faithfulness. Paul teaches us that our sufferings honor the afflictions Christ endured, and as we bear our own crosses, we contribute to the growth and strength of Christ’s body, the church.
Suffering for Christ is not a penalty but a blessing. 1 Peter 2:19-24 commends those who endure sorrow for Christ’s sake, following His example of patience and trust. Jesus teaches in Matthew 5:10-12 that we are blessed when persecuted for righteousness, encouraging us to rejoice and be glad because of the reward awaiting us in heaven.
Christians must strive to carry on Christ’s work, understanding that the church is His spiritual body. Ephesians 1:22-23 highlights the church’s critical role in salvation, showing that Christ and the church function together. The church must represent Christ on earth, continuing His mission until He returns.
Paul’s responsibility as a minister, described in Colossians 1:25-29, emphasizes preaching the gospel faithfully. His mission to the Gentiles reveals that salvation is available to all who obey the gospel, transcending the previous exclusivity to Jews. The mystery Paul revealed is that Christ in us is the hope of glory, attainable only through embracing His teachings.
Paul’s goal was to bring every believer to spiritual maturity. As Christians, we must labor tirelessly, to the point of exhaustion, to support and encourage each other in faith. Philippians 4:13 and Ephesians 1:19-20 remind us that we do not labor alone; Christ strengthens us, empowering us with the same power that raised Him from the dead.
Brothers and sisters, as we face life’s challenges, let us strive to respond with the love and strength that come from a life filled with Christ. Let us pray and support each other in our journey toward maturity and fulfilling our mission as Christ’s body.
