I am calling you to think about the ministry of John the Baptist before Jesus began His work. I remind you that John went out into the wilderness of Judea and preached with a simple but powerful message: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” I want you to understand that repentance is not merely saying you are sorry. I urge you to change your mind and your heart, to turn from sin and return to God with genuine, godly sorrow. When that kind of repentance lives in you, it produces zeal, sincerity, and a desire to live rightly before God.
I explain that John’s mission was not about himself. I show you that he was the one foretold by the prophets, the voice crying in the wilderness, preparing the way for the Lord. Long before John was born, God had declared his purpose: to make people ready for the coming Messiah. His work was brief, but powerful, preparing hearts to receive Jesus.
I also point out that John was successful. People from Jerusalem, Judea, and the region around the Jordan came to him. They confessed their sins and were baptized in the Jordan River. Yet I warn you that repentance must be real. When the Pharisees and Sadducees came, John called them a “brood of vipers.” I stress that true repentance must produce fruit. It must show itself in compassion for the poor, honesty in business, fairness in life, and a sincere change of heart.
I challenge the false confidence that some people had. Many believed that simply being descendants of Abraham guaranteed their salvation. I make it clear that heritage cannot save you. God desires faithful hearts, not empty claims of religious identity. If a tree does not bear good fruit, it will be cut down and thrown into the fire. That warning reminds you that judgment is real.
Then I direct your attention to the One who is coming after John. I tell you that John himself declared that someone far greater was coming—so great that John felt unworthy even to carry His sandals. John baptized with water for repentance, but the One who follows him will baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire. I explain that Jesus will separate the wheat from the chaff, gathering the faithful and judging the unfaithful.
I want you to see that John’s preaching prepared people for the message of Jesus. When Jesus began His ministry, He preached the very same call: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” The apostles continued that message after Him, urging people everywhere to repent and turn to God.
I leave you with a question that you must answer for yourself: Where do you stand today? Jesus came the first time to save the world, but He will come again to judge it. If He returned today, what would He say to you?
I urge you to respond to the gospel. I tell you that the path begins by hearing the message of Christ, believing in Him, repenting of your sins, confessing that Jesus is the Son of God, and being baptized for the forgiveness of sins. In that moment, the Lord adds you to His church and writes your name in the Book of Life.
And if you have wandered away, I remind you that God still offers forgiveness when you return to Him in repentance and prayer. I invite you to consider your life carefully and respond while the opportunity is still before you.
