Today, I want to take you on a journey through 2 Timothy Chapter 1, starting at verse 13, to share a profound lesson that has the power to transform your understanding and approach to faith. As Paul writes to Timothy, he imparts wisdom that is meant for Timothy and for each of us today. He urges, “Hold fast the form of sound words which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.” This command, to hold fast to the pattern of sound words, is a call to steadfastness and fidelity in the teachings we’ve received.
What does it mean to hold fast to sound words? It means to cling to the true teachings that resonate with the soundness and integrity of God’s Word. Paul emphasizes that these aren’t just any words; they are the words that have been heard directly from him, rooted in faith and love that is found in Christ Jesus. The various translations of the Bible echo this sentiment, each urging us to retain, follow, and adhere to the standard of sound teaching.
To embody this command requires a particular attitude, one that is exemplified by the likes of Micaiah, Joshua, Job, Daniel, and Ezra. Despite facing immense trials, these figures chose to serve the Lord and hold true to His teachings. They understood something crucial: sound words are not men’s words but God’s words. This distinction is vital. In a world where man’s words often lead to paths of destruction, the words of God offer life and truth.
Holding true to sound words means rejecting the notion that it’s permissible if the Bible doesn’t explicitly forbid something. This interpretation misses the essence of living by God’s Word. Instead, we are called to silence before the Lord, to live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God, as Jesus Himself taught.
As we reflect on the Apostle Paul’s teachings and the example of the Holy Spirit speaking through the apostles, we recognize that our preaching and understanding must be rooted in divine revelation, not human invention. This revelation is not something of the past; it is as relevant today as it was in the times of the apostles.
As I challenge myself, I challenge you: Are we living by sound words? Are we letting the whims of society sway our adherence to God’s teachings, or are we standing firm, peculiar and distinct, in our commitment to sound doctrine? This is not about following my words or anyone else’s but about ensuring our lives align with the truth of the scriptures.
As we gather in worship and study, let’s approach with open hearts, minds, and Bibles, verifying that the teachings we embrace are firmly grounded in scripture. This is our responsibility, our call to faithfulness.
