I want to welcome you here today on this Lord’s Day morning — a time where I gather with you not out of routine, but because I love God, and I want to worship Him in spirit and in truth. And today, I want to talk to you about something that might hit close to home — something that might already be quietly happening in your heart.

You see, earlier we read from Revelation 2 — the letter to the church in Ephesus. They were doing many good things, but Jesus had something against them: they had left their first love. And I want to ask you today — have you?

I’m concerned. I see a trend — not just in other places, but sometimes even among us. Apathy. A spirit that goes through the motions — praying, singing, attending, but with no fire. No passion. No depth. It’s like an athlete in a slump. The talent’s still there. The motions are still being made. But the heart? It’s not in the game.

So what does that athlete do? What does the team do when they’re in a slump? They go back to the fundamentals. And as Christians, when we find ourselves in a spiritual slump, that’s exactly what we must do too.

This morning, I want to take you back to the basics — five things I believe you need to return to to renew your walk with God.

  1. Energize Your Faith

Faith is more than belief — it’s confident trust. Hebrews 11:1 tells me faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. And in verse 6, I’m reminded that without faith it is impossible to please God.

Faith isn’t optional — it’s essential. I believe that Jesus came to this earth, died, was raised, and is now sitting at the right hand of the Father — even though I’ve never seen Him with my own eyes. That’s faith.

And when your faith feels weak? Get in the Word. Romans 10:17 says faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. The more I read it, the more I trust Him. The more I trust Him, the more I walk in boldness.

  1. Fortify Your Hope

Hope is more than a wish — it’s a confident expectation. When I was a child, I hoped for birthday gifts. Now, as a child of God, I hope for something far greater — eternal life.

Romans 8:25 tells me that when I hope for what I don’t see, I wait for it with perseverance. That means I don’t give up. I don’t stop just because things get hard. Why? Because I know there’s something better coming.

And how do I strengthen that hope? Again — through Scripture. Romans 15:4 says the things written before were written for my learning, that through patience and the comfort of the Scriptures, I might have hope. God has kept every promise He’s ever made. And that tells me, He’ll keep the ones He’s made to me too.

  1. Activate Your Love

You know what the greatest gift is? It’s not prophecy, knowledge, or tongues. According to 1 Corinthians 13, it’s love. And love isn’t just a feeling — it’s action. It’s goodwill in motion.

Do I love my brethren? Not just in word — but in truth and deed? John tells me in 1 John 3:14 that if I don’t love my brother, I’m still in death. That’s serious.

Jesus showed me how to love. He laid down His life for me. And if I want to activate that same kind of love, I need to keep looking to Him and what He’s done. The more I meditate on God’s love for me, the more I learn how to love others.

  1. Enhance Your Joy

Joy isn’t just happiness — it’s delight in God’s grace. And when I truly understand what God has done for me — when I remember that I’m forgiven, free, and heaven-bound — how can I not be joyful?

But I also know what it feels like when joy fades. And when it does, I go back to the Word. John 15:11 — Jesus said these things are written so my joy may be full. And when I pray and God answers, it fills my soul with joy like nothing else. John 16:24 tells me that, too.

  1. Enjoy Your Peace

Peace — not just the absence of conflict, but harmony with God, with others, and even within myself. That’s the kind of peace that Philippians 4:7 says surpasses all understanding.

I have peace with God through Jesus Christ, and I keep that peace through prayer. When the world weighs me down, when worries pile up, I take them to Him — and He gives me peace that no person could ever give.

So let me ask you — where are you today? Are you in a spiritual slump? Have you lost your fire? Your joy? Your love? Is your peace missing? Then let me be plain — get back to the basics.

Go back to the Word of God. Go back to prayer.

They are the tools that energize your faith, fortify your hope, activate your love, enhance your joy, and help you enjoy the peace that only comes from walking with Christ.

James 1:21 says to receive the implanted Word with meekness. Colossians 4:2 says to continue earnestly in prayer. Friend, it really is that simple.

So now I ask: Are you following the basics?

If you’re not a child of God, today is the day to start. The plan of salvation is clear:

  • Hear the gospel of Jesus.
  • Believe it.
  • Repent — not just feel sorry, but change your life.
  • Confess with your mouth that Jesus is the Son of God.
  • Be baptized — fully immersed — for the remission of your sins.

And when you come up out of that water? You’re a new creation. Everything from your past — erased. God remembers it no more.

But then — stay faithful. Live for Him. Stay in the Word. Keep praying. And you will receive that crown of life.

Maybe you’ve already done those things, but you’ve stumbled. Friend, if that’s you — come back. He’s waiting. Ask for forgiveness. Return to the basics. Let us pray with you and for you.
