When David walked into the Valley of Elah, his confidence was not in five smooth stones or in his own ability—it was in God. Yet David still prepared himself. He gathered five stones from the brook because faith is not passive. God gave the victory, but David had to cooperate with Him. That same principle applies to us today. God is still accomplishing His work in the world, and He calls us to partner with Him.
The first stone we need to place in our pouch is evangelism. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He gave His disciples the Great Commission. He commanded them to go into all the world, preach the gospel, make disciples, and teach people to obey His Word. That mission did not end with the apostles. As followers of Christ, we have been sent into the world to share the good news. We should never be ashamed of the gospel, because it is God’s power to save. Every person needs the opportunity to hear and obey the message of Christ.
The second stone is truth. Jesus declared that the truth sets us free, but only if we know it and live by it. In a world filled with confusion and false teaching, we must continually measure everything against God’s Word. Scripture is the lamp that lights our path and guides our steps. If we remain faithful to God’s doctrine, we not only strengthen our own faith but also help lead others to salvation.
The third stone is holiness. God has called us to live differently from the world around us. Holiness is not simply avoiding sin; it is offering our lives as living sacrifices that are pleasing to God. When we allow Him to transform our minds instead of conforming to the world’s values, our lives become a light that points others to Christ. Our conduct should reflect the One we serve.
The fourth stone is unity. Jesus prayed that His followers would be one, just as He and the Father are one. Unity strengthens the church and demonstrates to the world that Christ truly came from God. Division weakens God’s people, but humility, patience, love, and a shared commitment to the truth preserve the unity Christ desires for His church. We should strive together with one heart, one faith, one Lord, and one purpose.
The fifth and final stone is love. Jesus taught that the greatest commandments are to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Everything else flows from these two commands. Genuine love is active. It seeks the good of others, serves without selfishness, and reflects the very character of Christ. Without love, all our efforts lose their true purpose.
David defeated Goliath with a single stone because God gave the victory. In the same way, every spiritual victory we enjoy comes through God’s power, not our own. Jesus has already conquered Satan, defeated death, and made forgiveness possible through His sacrifice. Our responsibility is to faithfully partner with Him by filling our lives with these five smooth stones: evangelism, truth, holiness, unity, and love.
As we examine our own lives, let us ask whether we are carrying these qualities each day. If we have not yet obeyed the gospel, today is the opportunity to hear God’s Word, believe in Christ, repent of our sins, confess Him before others, and be baptized into Him. If we have already begun that journey, let us continue to remain faithful, trusting in God’s grace as we seek to serve Him until the day we receive the crown of life.
