In Colossians 3:18-21, we find guidance for family roles, emphasizing the need for harmony and respect within our household. Wives are advised to submit to their husbands, husbands to love their wives, children to obey their parents, and fathers not to provoke their children. These instructions are mirrored in the workplace, as we see in the subsequent verses, where servants and masters are urged to treat each other justly and fairly.
Yet, in the midst of fulfilling these roles, we must be cautious not to let the good overshadow the better. The story of Mary and Martha serves as a powerful example. Martha, busy with hosting duties, becomes frustrated with Mary, who chooses to sit at Jesus’ feet, absorbing His teachings. Martha’s focus on hospitality, while commendable, detracted from the opportunity to spiritually engage with Jesus.
This narrative prompts us to question ourselves: Are we, like Martha, allowing our responsibilities, even good ones, to distract us from deeper spiritual engagement? Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 10:37 and the parable of the Great Supper in Luke 14:16-24 warn us against allowing worldly duties to take precedence over our spiritual calling. Similarly, Luke 8:14 cautions us against letting the cares of this world choke out our spiritual growth.
So, where do you stand? Are you disciplined like Mary, prioritizing the spiritual over the temporal? Are we fully embracing our spiritual journey, choosing what is eternally beneficial over what is momentarily satisfying? Martha’s story didn’t end with her being distracted; she eventually finds harmony in serving and spiritual engagement, as seen in John 12:1-2.
In conclusion, our true focus should be on seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness first, as emphasized in Matthew 6:31-33. This doesn’t mean neglecting our earthly responsibilities, but rather aligning them with our spiritual priorities. Today, I encourage each of you to introspect. If you feel the call to make a change, to step closer in your walk with Christ, or to realign your priorities, this is your moment.
