Today, I want to talk to you about being a light in the world, a vital topic given our ever-changing society. We live in what some call a post-Christian culture, where traditional biblical values are increasingly sidelined. Our TV shows, movies, and even religious practices reflect this shift away from Biblical principles. This change challenges us as Christians: how do we respond and protect ourselves and our families?

In Philippians 2:12-16, Paul, under house arrest, writes to the church in Philippi. This city, deeply influenced by Roman paganism, mirrors our current society’s fascination with materialism and sensual pleasures. Paul’s words to them are a guide for us, too. He urges Christians to “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” This doesn’t mean earning salvation but living it out daily with deep reverence for God. Remember Jesus’ words in Matthew 7: take the log out of your own eye first. We must get our lives right with God before trying to correct others.

Paul emphasizes the importance of discipline and self-control. Without them, we risk disqualifying ourselves in God’s eyes. We must let God work within us, nurturing our motivation and abilities. But beware, living in sin hinders the Spirit’s work in us. Ask yourself: how can God use me in His service?

Maintaining a positive attitude is crucial. Our world is full of negativity and complaints, which can dampen our spiritual fervor. Unity among believers is essential. Disputes and divisions weaken us. We’re called to be blameless and harmless, living above reproach and avoiding actions that could hinder our ability to be lights in the world.

Holding fast to the Word of Life is our anchor. The Word is our guide and source of strength, equipping us to face worldly challenges and temptations. Ezra, who set his heart to study and obey God’s law, is an excellent example of this commitment.

Our role as Christians is to shine as lights in a crooked and perverse generation. We do this by working out our salvation with reverence, letting God work in us, maintaining a positive attitude, striving for unity and blamelessness, and holding firmly to God’s Word. Our efforts are not in vain. To be part of Christ’s church, we must hear the gospel, believe, repent, confess Jesus as Lord, be baptized for the remission of sins, and live faithfully. If you’ve strayed, remember, we all fall short, but God’s grace is sufficient. If you need to repent, do so. We’re here to support each other. Reflect on our commitment to shine as lights in the world.
