We live in a world where the definition of manhood is increasingly confused. But instead of allowing culture to define what a man should be, we need to return to God’s Word and allow our Creator to define us. Men and women are equal in value before God, but God created us with distinctions and responsibilities that matter.

From the beginning, God created mankind in His image. In Genesis, God gave Adam responsibility: he was to work, tend the garden, exercise dominion, and care for what God entrusted to him. God then created woman as a suitable helper, establishing the pattern of marriage and family. While marriage and children are not possible or required for every individual, we see a biblical model calling men toward maturity, responsibility, productivity, service, and, when applicable, faithful leadership within the family.

Men, we were not created to sit back and contribute nothing. God gave us minds, abilities, strength, and opportunities so that we could use them for His glory and the good of others. We should bring what we might call “surplus value” into the lives around us. Imagine what our families would become if we listened to more complaints than we made, gave more compliments than we needed to receive, gave more than we took, noticed others more than we demanded attention, and blessed others more than we expected to be blessed.

That is the kind of manhood we should pursue.

Being created in God’s image also means something much deeper than physical appearance. We have the capacity to think, reason, work, love, protect, provide, and pursue holiness. God did not create us merely to satisfy ourselves. He created us for fellowship with Him and to reflect His character.

But we need to recognize the difference between biblical strength and the world’s imitation of it. Strength is not arrogance. Courage is not domination. Confidence is not pride. Success is not measured merely by money, possessions, appearance, athletic ability, or popularity. A man can appear tremendously successful to the world while failing spiritually before God. If you gain everything materially but lead yourself and your family away from God, that is not success.

Look instead at David’s mighty men. They developed their abilities. They were strong, disciplined, prepared for battle, wise enough to understand their times, stouthearted enough to stand their ground, and loyal in heart. Those qualities give us a powerful picture of the maturity men need today.

Men, we need to grow up and put away childish things. We need to discipline our bodies, but even more importantly, we need to discipline our souls. We need the courage to stand when truth is challenged, the wisdom to understand the times in which we live, and the integrity to remain loyal to God and faithful to the people He has placed in our lives.

So we need to ask ourselves some difficult questions: What kind of men are we? What does God see when He looks at us? What do our wives, children, families, and communities see? Are we adding value to their lives, or are we continually expecting them to add value to ours?

And if you want to know what godly manhood ultimately looks like, look at Jesus.

Jesus was strong, but He was humble. He was a leader, yet He served. He worked diligently, yet He was generous and compassionate. He courageously spoke the truth and stood against what was wrong, yet He was gentle, merciful, and forgiving. Jesus shows us that true masculinity is not about proving how powerful we are. It is about possessing the strength to use what God has given us in service to God and others.

So make it your goal to become more like Christ every day. You do not have to become the man the world celebrates. You need to become the man God created you to be.

Work hard. Develop your abilities. Take responsibility. Protect and provide. Love deeply. Serve generously. Stand courageously for truth. Pursue holiness. Be faithful. Bring more into the lives of others than you demand from them.

And above everything else, follow Jesus.

That kind of life gives us something our culture desperately needs: men with purpose. And when you know the purpose God has given you, you have a reason to get up every morning and pursue something greater than yourself.

Don’t wait another day. Start becoming the man God wants you to be.
