When I was a child I used to imagine that everyone else was an alien and I was the only one on earth who was from earth. I’ve always had a vivid imagination. We didn’t have cell phones or video games. We had TV but it was only turned on in the evening after supper to watch a show together with family. Life was simpler then and it would be nice to go back to those ways, but the fact is time marches on and if we don’t keep up it leaves us behind.

We are well into the 21st century; 2023 is officially here. Those of us who remember Y2K feel like it was just a short time ago when in fact, the children born that year graduated from college last May.

It is good to remember the past and there is nothing wrong with missing the good ol’ days, but it is important to keep up with the times. A new year is here and what will this year hold for you? Will this be the year you sore like an eagle or sink like a rock? Will your relationship with God be stronger at the next New Year’s Eve or weaker? How hopeful are you about your future? Have you ever wondered where hope comes from?

For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
– Romans 15:4

Scripture gives us hope. Hope is like a note on a piano (the kind that doesn’t plug in). That note is strong when you first strike the key but then starts to fade. You have to strike the key again to maintain the sound. In the same way, the Scriptures strike your heart and give you hope, but if God’s Word is not perpetually striking your heart hope fades. No matter what 2023 holds for you, as long as you have God you have hope.
