The Gibeonites, by deception has become the servants of the nation of Israel. They are to serve them as woodcutters and water barriers. Israel is to protect them as they would any servants.
The 5 kings of the Amorites agree on an alliance to defend themselves against Israel. Because of the peace brokered by the Gibeonites, (who’s nationality was Amorite) the 5 kings have become their enemy and are about to attack them.
Joshua chapter 10 begins the extended conquest of the Canaan lands. The 5 kings of the Amorites have placed themselves directly in God sight. They were Idolaters and God would not allowed such to trouble the People of Israel or their servants.
We see God takes a great hand in their defeat just as he had Jericho and Ai.
Gods hates idolatry and while we generally think of it as bowing down to a statue it is not confined to that. Exodus 20:3 commands no other gods before God. That does not mean God is first it means to put nothing more important than Me.
Idolatry will kill a nation, family & church. God will not tolerate it and we must learn to recognize it and learn how to get rid of it in our lives.
