Our story is best known for the time Peter, at the biding of Jesus walked on the water. Truly, this was a remarkable thing for Peter to accomplish. Yet we do not remember this story for what Peter did as much as for what he failed to do. Remember the story of how Peter asked Jesus to command him to walk on the water. He got out of the boat and began to walk when he looked at the storm around him his faith began to wane and he started to sink.

There have been many lessons and sermons taught on this very subject. Most of them concerning looking around, or small faith or something along these lines. These are all good fodder for this passage. Yet there is more here than meets the eye.

Surely, the fact he got out of the boat says much about Peter’s faith. Still the same storm that tossed around the boat before he left it was still present when he got out. I wonder what Peter thought would happen.

The story is about faith and what It can do. Jesus was perfect He could walk on water. Peter was a sinner and it was only through the faith in Jesus he had made it that far.

Finally, this story concerns “sinking”. We all do you know. 1 John 1:8. But our story tells us there is something we can do about it.
